Just read a article that said wearing a black suit to work was not good. The lights make the person look pale or sick.
Just make sure you match. Employers, dates, see if your socks, shoes, shirts, tie, coat lining match. If they do, it is a sign that you are a organized, coordinated, detail oriented.type of person, that you care about your appearance. If you care about your appearance, you might care about the date, or your job.
What's that song about a sharp dressed man?
Personally, I do not think there is anything nicer than a white, starched, ironed shirt on a guy. I would be very attracted to a date dressed in one.
The darker the suit, the dressier the occasion should be. The less the coat and pants match, the more casual the occasion it should be worn at. The more colors in the suit, shirt and tie, the less formal the ocassion it should be worn at. The busier the stripes, plaids in the suit the more informal it becomes. Same with a tie..
And girls love it when you ask the color of their dress, and try to coordinate with it, or at least not clash with her outfit.
Look through some magazines for the latest styles and colors, try to pick something on the conservative side, it is less likely to go out of style before you get some good out of the suit. Or find a talkative salesperson, who should be able to advize you, but, remember they also want to sell you a suit. A smart salesperson knows if they do right by you, you'll be back.

Remember: always dress for the position you want, not for the position you are filling.
What you get depends on your budget, and on your line of work - some professions require more dressing-up than others.
Being limited (aren't we all...), get fist one classic suit of good quality (go to discount stores!! its sales season, and Marshalls, or TJMaxx will have good deals for you) rather than 2 or 3 poorly made (don't think it isn't visible!!! alas! not to mention uncomfortable and scratchy). I suggest a dark grey or a navy one, solid. Pin stripes need more fine tuning, they can be great, but also can be worn and look "wrong".
That will fit most situation, both formal and work. Add to this 2 or 3 pairs of slack in complementing colors (if you get a navy suit, a couple of dark gray pants will go nicely), and get them tailored to your high (don't wear EVER too long, too short pants).
YOu will also need dark socks (never whities!), a good pair of lace up shoes, and 3 to 5 dress shirts, whites and light blues. You could get a pin striped one here...
Ties: classic does it, unless you can carry off wild. SIlk only, never polyesther (it shows..), here 3 to 5 to go with the different shirts.
It is really a minimal wardrobe - if you need to wear it everyday, you will need to double it pretty fast, by getting a second suit and a second pair of shoes (if you wear the same shoes every day, they will get ruined very fast! you should alternate).
Consider always to stay in the same color scheme: it will save time, money and space. Remember to iron your suit and your shirts properly, it is better to have few items but of good quality and well kept, than a whole large wardrobe, but with cheap stuff.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suit_(clothes)The classic suit colors are navy blue, grey, and charcoal. Black is traditionally a color for one's dinner jacket (tuxedo), not one's suit. Black, however, is an appropriate color for funerals and mourning. Traditional suits are generally solid colors or pinstripes, with refined plaids sometimes qualifying.
This site (Wikipedia) has everything you ever needed to know about anything...good luck :)

I'm assuming you're a dude...in that case any of the ones you describe would be fine for either weddings or job interviews. Just be sure it fits you well & have it altered if need be. If its a dressy occasion you might need a tuxedo, but hey, you can always rent those!

the later in the day, the darker the suit
a black suit should only be worn for evening wear
for work i think gray, dark gray, charcoal, or is best
you probably want to avoid pinstripes
