Go to the manufacturer's website and download all of the drivers for that particular laptop. You will probably need drivers for the display, ethernet card, modem, sound card, etc. because windows XP does not always carry the drivers for every manufacturer. They usually can be downloaded as zip files which can be burned to a CD and then copied to the laptop once the OS is reinstalled.
If your version of XP does not include service pack 2, you will probably want to download that as well.

Well aside from the OS, XP, you will also be needing the installers for the programs that you use on your computer. Most important I think is your Office Installer. You may probably need installers for hardwares connected to your pc, like cdrom drive, dvdrom drive, modems, printers, etc. And before you reformat, in case you want to retain any of your files, make sure to make a back up on a different drive, so you can still restore it.

You should have a bootable disk if you are going to load windows 98 or previous versions.
For others like 2000 and XP you dont need it coz the OS cd itself boots up the pc.
You should have a copy of your drivers software like display driver for ur monitor, network driver, audio driver, and other drivers if you have any other hardwares installed.
You should have got a copy of all softwares you regularly use in case of emergency.
Thats it you can now safely format your hard drive and re install your OS.

no, you don't. i reinstall windows usually every two months. a tip for the reinstall, though. Make sure you don't do a quick format on the hard drive. If you do a quick one, it doesn't check for errors. Just make sure you have your hardware drivers handy.
