It depends on what grade levels you are teaching. But there is a great book called "The First Days of School" that every new teacher should have.
It is full of ideas that are classroom tested, and will make you feel more in control of yourself and your class.
The author is Harry Wong, and it's available at any bookstore. Go take a look at it. I think you'll be glad you did.

I would prepare myself, by keeping an eye on the children, their work habits, attendance, their grades, and most important their behavior. Inviting the parents to always inquire about their children, keeping parents informed throughout the school year.
