Could someone please explain what a kipper is? I'm from the states and I was reading the Harry Potter books and they often mention having kippers for breakfast. I thought it was a fish but surely thats not what they are having for breakfast?!

uh, yummy...
yeah i dont really like fish in general so its hard to picture me eating them at 6 am with my toast. nothin against lucky charms either but i generally reach for fruit. no insult intended on other countries food preferences! I enjoy quite a few of them! :)

A kipper is a whole fish that has been split from tail to head, eviscerated, salted, and smoked. Typically, the species is a herring or salmon, but traditionally it is any fish found in great numbers and caught during its spawning period. Spawning fish are not good to eat fresh and usually arrive in great abundance, thus they are salted and smoked to improve flavor and preservation.

ugh god...

A kipper is a herring (a kind of fish) which is flattened and smoked. They are then fried or baked and usually eaten at breakfast. Yummy! I like them best with baked tomato! Just because Americans don't eat 'em doesn't mean the rest of the world doesn't (we don't eat lots of Lucky Charms for breakfast, thank goodness!!! Blech! No wonder Americans have such obesity problems). I know it's hard for you Statesiders, but try to keep an open mind about the big wonderful world out there. It's the differences that make the world interesting.

kipper what? Yom Kipper is a jewish holiday. Kipper sardine is a type of fish...in european countries it is not unusual to eat fish for breakfast or lunch as part of the meal. Add an "s" and you've got skipper!
