Good question. Compare the history of the vatican and all that it has done with Daniel 7,8, Revelation 13,14, and 18. You will see that the papacy is being described.
The vatican claims to be the representative of God, but it is the representative of the god of this world, Satan.

ROFL, I guess you don't watch protestant TV.
I always laugh and feel sorry for them at the same time when I turn on religious TV like the 700 club and see people sitting on gold gilded chairs begging others to send in all their money to "do good". Do we really think God thinks buying golden chairs is a good thing? Maybe he does, I don't know, but I sure don't see that any where in the bible.
But, the reasons they do it are the same reasons the vatican does it. The King of heaven should be treated as a king. So, he has a castle and treasure, just like all the other kings. To do less would be to make him less than the King.
And, like evangelitical TV, the catholic church needs money and treasure to fund it's operation.
I can say, however, that the pope can't be considered a "rich leader", I'm pretty darn sure the Pope makes less a year than the poorest tent revival guy.
It would be fun, however, to compare the incomes of the pope with people like the Drs. Schuller and their "crystal cathedral" or Pat Robertson and all his riches.

Everyone has kinda answered this question the same way, but if you're a history buff at all, the history of early Christianity explains a lot of where the RC church is now and where it shoulda/coulda been.
The first church was actually the eastern Orthodox church. It was all run by committees (home bases in Antioch, Jerusalem, Alexandria, Constantinople, and Rome).
Through western Roman polictics, Rome decided to go on its own (pride, arrogance, politics, power) and separated from the Orthodox church. Even many of the later RC saints expressed a sense of power and pride in their writings.
On the other hand, the Orthodox church has survived quietly throughout the last 2000 years. The humble monestaries and beautiful churches survive around the world with the same theology it had in 33 AD.
(This information is "news" to most Americans. It was to me when I found the Orthodox church in America 3 years ago)

In true Christianity only God has authority in ones life.
The pope does not have authority to forgive sin, nor does the catholic church. This is Satans way of deceiving people.
God does have a true church where He's in charge but its still run by people who do make mistakes. The difference is when they do they correct them & say I'm sorry ,I was wrong.

Hopefully you believe what God says in His Word. Just go there and read it for yourself. You will soon discover that God doesn't put any authority in religion at all. You are right in your thinking concerning the riches some religion gather in the name of God. When you are thirsty, you get a drink of water. When you need wisdom from God, then go to His Word. Its in the volumne of the Book.><>

Yeah seriously, that is just too much. Also what sickens me is that the gold palace they have comes from people's donations. I mean what the hell, those donations are to help people not decorate a fancy palace. Oh and dont get me started on how much money they have. They are rich okay, too rich to not give a damn to anyone on the streets.

This is true not only for the pope, but for any overly affluent religious leader.
Religion is a lot like sex. It turns into something bad when money is involved.

Jesus might even agree with you!
I mean, they do hold BINGO GAMES, don't they!
What did Jesus do when he went to the temple and saw the money lenders and cock fights!
Of course, I don't want to be a Catholic basher!
I have problems with ALL organized religion, not just them!
Read what was said about Jesus and what Jesus said.
Live life as good as you can.
Who can ask more?
