Glass is a sterial substance where metals are not. Metals will release chemicals into any liquid that is contained in them. When it is food or beverage it can result in a metal taste or a different taste coming from the can.

It is why you see many food cans today lined with a army like green coloring. Thin layer of plastic to help prevent the leak of this taste to the food.

Also why some beer companies advertise aluminum bottles, aluminum gives off the least amount of metal taste of all metals.

It doesn't, this is a total misconception.
Cans used to impart an off flavor, but can liners and packaging technology has come so far that you can't tell the difference anymore. Canned beer has already started winner competitions...but it's still a rarity in the craft brewing industry...not because cans taste different, but because of economics. If you already have an established bottling line, taking it out and buying all new equipment is a huge investment, and as most breweries aren't making huge profits, it's a luxury expense.
One of my local breweries just expanded and didn't put in more bottling capacity, they went to cans.
I know it's hard to believe, but you seriously can't tell the difference if someone poured can and bottle beer into two glasses and didn't tell you which was which.

The food industry is now lining the aluminum cans to protect the foods flavor against the metal. The beer companies haven't caught on yet. Whenever I drink canned beer I always pour it into a glass. It helps a little.
