North American P-51 Mustang! Hands down. Beautiful, and functional. It was also badly needed in a dirty fight. They were flown in the last all-out no holds barred world war, and to great effect. From drawing board to air trials in 100 days, they are old-time down and dirty technology, with an awesome V12 engine, eight .50 cal. Colt Browning machine guns. No tracking computers or guided missiles, these guns were aimed by flying right up to the other guy and trying to stay on target by pure skill and guts. The P-51 still holds speed records for prop driven planes even after fifty years, and sounds way cooler than any jet!

The Lancaster Bomber. What a plane. Four Rolls Royce Merlin engines that sound like nothing on earth. The Lancaster was mainly a night bomber and in the days of WW II the technology that we have today wasn't available. Pilots flew by the seat of their pants. Navigators worked with maps, rulers and pencils. Gunners powered their turrets with a sort of bicycle gearing, three in total carrying eight Browning 303's, and all of the crew knew that if they survived thirty operations they were damned lucky. The plane, however, is shrouded in romance undertaking far more missions than any other bomber. Remember 617 Squadron's daring Dam Buster raid. They flew a round trip of 1200 miles at only 50 feet high. Of an original muster of 19 planes, one was damaged on takeoff and one jettisoned it's bomb and returned, 7 were shot down and 57 men lost their lives in one night's raid. The raid was led by Group Captain Guy Gibson V C , DFC on the night of 16th May 1943. Three dams were breached causing great damage to the German war effort. Sadly Gibson was shot down the following September whilst flying a Mosquito.

the nearest you'll locate is the "parasite fighter" classes contained in the 20's or so w/ Zepplins and later large bombers contained in the 50's yet then those planes did not "land" they flew as a lot because the mothership from lower than and snagged a bar or something w/ a hook and were then reeled in when that they had executed this (yet this by no potential went previous the finding out degree) So no, planes have by no potential landed on different planes w/out the crash being suggested on the 6 o'clock information

Duke, the F22 is good, but not the most advanced. The F-35 is the most advanced Aircraft that the military has and will roll off of production in 2008.
