I read some of it but how do you know if it is true?

I have read it. Much of it still applies to how the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is organized today, but some of it is more historically-based and should be read considering the context of 19th century culture and language as well. You can pray about small portions at a time and see what other insights you get. There are some marvelous verses in it that help explain many things which are confusing in the Bible, and as another answerer has said, it would help to read the Book of Mormon with the Doctrine and Covenants, including the Bible as well. There is an Institute student manual that helps explain the Doctrine and Covenants and Church history. If you can find an LDS Institute of Religion at a university near you, they can help direct you to a student manual. I think the average price is around $5 or so.

The Doctrine and Covenants is a compilation of revelations given to the early prophets of the Church of Jesus of Latter day Saints. It's a little bit confusing because it has very little history. To understand it better, I would (1) read the Book of Mormon (2) find a good LDS church history (published by the church, just for accuracy) and (3) pray about it. I know the Doctrine and Covenants is true because it's principles are so true. It talks about where people go when they die, what happens to children when they die, clarifies what is being said in the biblical book Revelations, and answers all kinds of gospel questions. I LOVE the book. Good luck.

Is that a book or something? I've read the "doctrine" or the teachings found in God's Word, and I've read the various covenants that He has made down through the ages. Those are all true. But if someone has written a book and it contradicts what God has said in the Bible then it is false.

The Doctrine and Covenents is modern revelation that sets forth how the church is to be ran in these last days. It also reveals Doctrines that were saved for the last days. One could say it's a manual that is a companion to the Bible and the Book of Mormon.

I assume you are referring to the Doctrine and Covenants of the Latter Day Saints http://scriptures.lds.org/dc/contents

I have not read them myself.

If you are evaluating the validity of them, there are websites that offer alternative views and critiques of what has been written in these documents. I will paste a few below, but you may find others by doing a web search.

You can know that it is true by the same way that you know the book of Mormon is true - by asking God.
