x+y=5..................(1
x-y=2
x=2+y....................(2
subsitiute (2 into (1
(2+y)+y=5
2y+2=5
2y=3
y=1.5
substitute y=1.5 into either (1 or (2
x=2+y
x=2+1.5
x=3.5

I agree with hardez... you sub x=y+2 (from the second equation) to the first equation and you get (y+2)+y=5, which simplifies to y=3/2 or 1.5. Then sub y=1.5 to the either equation and you get x=3.5. Hardez was quick...

x+y=5 so x=5-y
x-y=2
then x-y=2 so x+y=5
(5-y)-y=2 x=5-y
5-2y=2 x=5-1.5
-2y=2-5 x= 3.5
-2y=-3
y=1.5
answer x=3.5 y=1.5
check:
x+y=5 3.5+1.5=5
x-y=2 3.5-1.5=2

x=6.5
y=3/2
x+ y= 5
-(x)-(-y)=-(2)
so
0+2y=3
2y/2=3/2
y=3/2
so
x+3/2=5
x=5-(3/2)
x=6.5
