Shockingly enough, I have already had a bartender try and talk me out of a Guinness once...at an Irish-style pub, no less. He claimed it was because he didn't know anyone who liked it and couldn't understand why they even had it on tap. He happily offered me an MGD instead.
For some reason, they weren't in business very long.

Traditionally, light lagers and wheat beers are the norm for summer, but unless the bartended is a complete knob, you should get served whatever you like.

Well, I'm not exactly answering your question but stand by your beer. If you want a Guinness and it draws an "are you crazy?" look from the waitress, you may just smile and repeat yourself, "Yes. A Guinness, please. If you don't have that, I'll take whatever's closest."

So you're completely nutso but you get what you wanted.
