Well, the Mayan occupated both the southern regions of Mexico as well as Guatemala. Although, personally, having been to two ruin sites, the ones in Guatemala are way better, esp the "main headquarters", TIKAL. It is awesome, but then there are other smaller ruin sites such as QUIRIGUA. Take a look at WIKIpedia for more info.

There are very good Mayan ruins all over the Yucatan peninsula in Mexico. They are well worth seeing. Those at Chichinitza are extraordinary. They rival those of Tikal and have been open for visiting much longer than Tikal. Tikal is, I understand since I've not been there, fabulous. My answer is that you see all you can and not restrict yourself to just one or two sites. If you're adventurous, you can use the area bus lines to go from one to another and see various sites within a matter of days.

The Mayans are descended from the Incas whose language was Quechua. This is also the language of the Maya in all of Latin America. Since you're thinking about seeing their ruins, read up on the Incas and their accomplishments as well on the Mayas before actually going. You'll have a much higher appreciation of what you see when you see it.

I envy you the trip. I've done a lot and am planning another for 2007. Enjoy it and good luck!

Mayans lived long before any countries existed. They lived both in the southern portion of Mexico as well as what is now Guatemala. Also in Honduras and Costa Rica (I think).

There are ruins all over the yucatan, all depends on which sites you want to hit. Tikal is in Guat, there are alot of less developed ruins sites in Belize and of course the big one in mexico. You may consider what else you are planning on doing during your vacation and then pick the area based on that.
