I saw it and to this day I feel as though Hagler was robbed by a truly over partisian crowd and the surroundings. It was close maybe a draw but not a win for Leonard.

I saw it and I was a HUGE Sugar Ray Leonard fan, but I thought Hagler won. That really was a strange fight...who knows, boxing has been soooooo dirty over it's history, anything is possible. The telling thing for me is the judges score cards. A 12 round split decision with these results?

Jose J. Guerra 118-110
Lou Filippo 113-115
Dave Moretti 115-113
Seems suspicious to me. What fight was Guerra watching?

BTW, here's the score cards of other members of the press that covered the fight. They're all over the map. AP had for Hagler, not Leonard, but most held for Leonard....

AP: 117-112 Hagler
New York Daily News: 117-111 Leonard
New York Times: 114-114
New York Post: 114-114
Newsday: 115-114 Hagler
Chicago Tribune: 7-5 in rounds Hagler
Houston Chronicle: 115-114 Leonard
Washington Post: 114-114
Boston Globe: 117-111 Leonard
Boston Herald 116-113 Leonard
Baltimore Sun: 7-5 in rounds Leonard
Oakland Tribune: 117-112 Leonard
San Jose Mercury-News: 116-115 Hagler

I have read all the answers posted here and the ones that say Sugar should have won , apparently don't know much about boxing. I have been in the fight game for over 30 years. This includes time as a fighter, coach, referee and judge.

Well enough about me and back to the question. Hagler could of fought a better fight, I will agree with you there. Sugar did fight the fight he needed to, by staying on that bicycle. But I just don't think the judges or the fans counted all the body shots Hagler landed. This is still a problem in boxing today, they just don't give enough credit to the body shot.

See you all later fight fans!!

There was no debate over who won the fight. Sugar landed more punches and out boxed Hagler. The AP had Sugar wining the fight also.

Hagler simply fought a dumb fight. Hagler should have went for a knockout and went for more power punches.

It was clear that Hagler didn't really get hurt from any of Sugar's punches and Hagler was able to hurt Sugar more, but Hagler was never able to knock him down and lost cause Sugar landed more punches and won the later rounds. It was good decision, just a dumb fight by Hagler and his people.

sorry but ive watched that fight a lot of times and i had leonard winning it !! he connected with the cleaner punches and out worked hagler!! if the fight had happened 3 years before there would have been a differant outcome! hagler was on the decline when he fought sugar!

I vaguely remember Hagler's expression as if to say 'man, i was robbed!' I personally think although SRL came out with some 'prettyboy' punches and so on i think Hagler's no-nonsense ruggedness really won it on the night. My money is on Hagler ( he was a favourite of mine)

Marvin Hagler beat Leonard as he landed the harder and more effective punches.

Hagler should've never let it come down to a partisan crowd or biased judges. He knew the situation. If he should've won, he should've done what was needed.
