Two factors influencing water retention are water consumption and salt intake. Strange as it sounds, the less water you drink, the more of it your body retains. If you are even slightly dehydrated your body will hang onto it’s water supplies with a vengeance, possibly causing the number on the scale to inch upward. The solution is to drink plenty of water.

Sodium can cause the body to retain fluid, leading to these frustrating daily weight fluctuations. Some people are more sensitive to sodium than others. Watch your diet and see if your weight gain corresponds with a high sodium meal the day before. For example, eating out in restaurants can often increase your sodium intake significantly since they tend to be a little over-zealous on salting and sodium-rich sauces and marinades.

Cross these high-sodium foods off your list
Canned fruits and vegetables; cheese; ketchup and soy sauce; microwave popcorn; processed meats like bologna, frankfurters, and cured ham; salted nuts; olives and pickles; smoked or cured fish; salted butter and margarine; and snack foods like potato chips and pretzels.

The vast majority comes from the sodium in processed foods. A serving of canned vegetable soup, for example, contains almost 900 mg of sodium. So read the label

Anything salty will cause water retention; high preservative high sodium foods, like saghetti-os or microwave meals, or table salt if you use enough of it on foods. But, sodium contains iodide, a necessary supplement in the diet. If you don't have enough iodide in your diet you can get a goiter, or large mass on the side or back of the neck. But, as Americans, we really don't have to worry about that due to the type of foods we eat.

Anything with a high sodium content. Even something as small as handful of green olives can make you swell, as they are very high in sodium.
