They live in your intestines but lay eggs on the outside of your butt. Whoever gave it to the girl had eggs on their butt, scratched them (they cause it to itch), then touched something that the girl touched and the girl then put her fingers in her mouth. It happens all the time. It DOES NOT mean that the 2 year old girl was a victim of sexual abuse or anything horrid like that.

How do people get pinworms?
Pinworms are easy to get. Pinworms are usually spread from child to child, and the eggs can be picked up on children's fingers when they are playing. Eggs can stay or your child's skin for several hours. They can survive for 2 weeks on clothes, bedding and toys. If the eggs are on your child's hands or toys, and your child puts their fingers or toys in their mouth, the tiny eggs can enter their bodies. The eggs stay in the upper part of the intestine until they hatch. After they hatch, the worms move down the length of the intestine, and then out the anus where they lay eggs.
When children scratch their itchy bottoms, the tiny eggs can get under their fingernails. As the children move around the house, the eggs may be spread, and other family members may become infected. Sometimes adults breathe in the eggs when the bed covers are shaken. However, this is very uncommon. Children easily infect each other while they are playing and by not thoroughly washing their hands before eating. Pets do not spread pinworms, although they may carry their own kinds of worms.

Pin-worms are most common in children, and are spread my touching anything contaminated...another child, a towel, etc. They get into the child's body from their hands to their mouth...the worm thrives in the intestine, and then lays its eggs around they anus. You can sometimes detect them by finding them in the toilet, or in their underwear. They seem to be more active at night...so a doctor might ask you to first thing in the morning examine the anal area in a dark place with a flashlight. The tiny white worms will reflect the light! Sounds a bit awful, but I worked quite a few years in a pediatric office, and its common. Wash your hands often!!

these come to people by contact via hands..... the eggs get onto taps etc and get under the nails, children always put their fingers in their mouths and they are transmitted through the gut while they mature into pin worms, they come out at night and move around the anus making it itch, the child then scratches itself and the cycle goes on, fingers in mouth, young children are not so meticulous on washing hands, if your 2 year old has them and you have other older children they are usually picked up in school or kindergarten, the whole family needs treatment as they are very contagious and all bed linen and towels changed and washed immediately.you can get tablets or linctus from a pharmacy.

Simple answer...from playing with dirty items. Pin worms are quite common...she could get them from another kid at play group/school. Dirty grocery cart...from a kid that had pin worms...
As a bonus...when the child is treated the adults in the family should be treated at the same time for pin worms...because they are highly contageous...
Don't shoot the messenger :) but hey you don't want an itchy anus too, do ya?

They get dirt under their nails when playing outside, then put their hands in their mouths. The eggs are transferred, then find their way through the digestive track.
