King Solomon made the statement found at 1kings8:12 after the priests deposited the Ark in the Most Holy and when, subsequently thereto, cloud filled the sanctuary. It was this cloud that reminded Solomon of the manner in which Jehovah God had earlier revealed his presence. For example,Moses was told "Look!,I am coming to you in a dark cloud"(Ex.19:9).When referring to this on another occasion,Moses stated:"There was darkness, cloud and thick gloom."(Deut.4:11).
In view of the fact that the Most High associated his presence with a cloud,Solomon could rightly speak of 'Jehovah residing in the thick gloom.'
Jehovah does not live in darkness as 1John 1:5 points out.

God's glory is too bright for humans to see and live so He had to shadow Himself so that the priests could do their duty of ministering to Him and sacrificing the animals etc. 1Kings 8:11

2Samuel 22:13 says that the coals caught fire from the brightness of His glory

now we as Christians should reflect some of that glorious light (because of Christ within us)

David sang this song unto God thanking him for delivering him from the enemy. The verses are poetic.about how God came into the darkness,(Evil) and It discribes him as fire breathing. As he came in to save David. As no man has ever seen God,we know this is a discription of how David felt about God delivering him from his enemy.
