Long Beach area has Belmont Shores. It's a long stretch just below downtown Long Beach and you can see the Queen Mary and all the oil islands (named after the Apollo astronauts). It also has relatively calm water because of the breakwater but it's not as clean as Huntington Beach since it is right in the harbor. One warning... It is notoriously nicknamed "Ray Bay" due to the presence of stingrays in the area, but people still go in the water regularly.
Another popular beach in the Long Beach area is Alamitos Bay which is also nice and calm. It's right in the marina area and is a good kids beach.
I personally prefer Huntington Beach. The only drawback is HB has bigger surf since it's exposed to the open ocean (so watch the young ones in the water). Still, great for kids though. It's a nice place to have a barbeque at night on the beach since they got firepits setup. Bring marshmallows and hotdogs and some skewers.
Seal Beach is mostly behind sea front houses so it's very quiet and less crowded than HB. It has a lot of open surf like HB though.

I've lived in Long Beach (LA County) and even though the beach is ok, I would recommend you Huntington Beach, there's more surf life there. You can go along the beach, there's a dog beach nearby, there's a pier with a nice restaurant at the end, I think it is Ruby's Burguers. You can see people surfing, playing volleyball, skating, you can rent surfboards, bicycles and other stuff. On Sunday's there's always live music, there's a farmer's market on Saturdays (not quite sure). I would hightly recommend you Huntington Beach if you are coming to visit. Seal Beach is a little quiet beach town with a nice pier, nice waves and that's it, its basically residential with not much commercial stuff going on (only by the Main Street) it's a pictorical cute little town.

I recomment you keep traveling south and make your way down to Laguna Beach as it is alot cleaner. While you are there, visit the Sawdust festival, or if you are lucky enough to get your little hands on some Pageant of the Masters (Live Art) tickets that would be a bonus!
Good Luck.

I think the bes be would be to drive down to Huntinton and go to Bolsa Chica. There is plenty of easy parking (10 bucks) though and miles of open beach and firepits.
