when i worked in a retail pharmacy to pay my way through school i used to steal a SUMMIT candy bar every day.
damn, i loved those things! then, after eating about a thousand of them over a 5 year period of employment, they were RECALLED by the FDA for being CONTAMINATED with SPIDER EGGS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrggggggggggggggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhh!
that's what i get for stealing!
for MONTHS after that every time i'd get a twinge or an odd pain i was sure that spiders would start popping out of every orifice in my body! yuck!

I used to steal when I was little, about 6 yrs old. I would go to the backpack closet at my school and i would steal money, Garbage Pail kid cards, pencil's, cool pens, etc.
I use to steal about 3 yrs ago and never realized I was doing it. My son would grab something to play with, like from walmart, and then I would forget that he has it in the basket and when I am loading up my car with my shopping bags to go home, I see it in my son's hands and I know for sure that I didn't pay for it. That has happened about 4 times. But they were all accidents though. ; )

I used to live with someone who shoplifted for a living. I picked up some real bad habbits: I had a soup bowl from a resturant that made it's way into a to-go box once. I had the cheezy salt shaker from a movie theatre; I stole a key chain from a bookstore, but it broke shortly afterward. I drove the get-away car when he was shoplifting w/his cousin once. I was with him when he was looking at a pair of gloves telling me how expensive they were and how he wasn't going to pay that much for them. He had them when he got home.
He had a friend who had credit card info from customers at work. He ordered some expensive clothes off of someone's AmEx once, and went to pick them up. Another time, he ordered an awesome stereo system. He left his ID at that store because he thought they were taking too long with it. He left with the stereo. I spent that evening cleaning up any trace of him (paperwork wise) because although he was no longer living with me, he had my address on that ID.
I've been reformed since, but I notice a lot more than I used to....

The most immoral act of theft I have committed was siphoning gas out of cars when I was broke so I could keep going.
I steal.
I always grab handfuls of napkins at any cafe or fast food restaurant.
I eat grapes in the super market.
I have a ketchup bottle from Denny's in my fridge.

This isn't dramatic, but interesting.
I only shoplifted once. And I took the item back the next day and placed it back on the shelf.
I think therein lies your answer. I don't think it's because people need the item as much as they need to fill some void or have some thrill.
