In Michigan, bottles can be returned for 10 cents. Other states, five cents. (twice as much dumpster diving for sure) but what does this California term mean?

It means California cash refund. Here's what you get:

4 cents per container less than 24 ounces

8 cents per container more than 24 ounces

For juice containers above 48 ounces, no deposit is collected or paid back to you.

It doesn't mean much... in CA, you only get some cash for weight of bottles, cans, etc. not for each container like some other states...

They give you so much money per can at a recycle bin.

at the place we go to for recycling, you usually get $1.40/lb of cans
