I would agree with the others. And no disrespect, but if you are having to ask about parrots in general, I would suggest you get a refund and try a different bird.
However, if you feel like you must get a macaw., my first thought would be a severe macaw. They're the smallest of all macaws and generally have a better nature (at least in my opinion)
And yes, make sure that when you purchase a bird, you are realizing it's a full time commitment for depending on the bird, possibly until the day you die. And with that said, you usually put the bird in your will as to where you want it to go to when you pass away.
Macaws in general are like big puppy dogs. They're neat as heck, but I really think they're for the experienced only.
Again, if you are asking any general questions like this, that means that you will probably be an irresponsible macaw owner - I just won't contribute any other thoughts as to encourage this purchase.
Sorry for you and bird.
But if you do end up with a macaw.. for good freaking gods sake.. get a gdam huge cage like he deserves. I'm far from being anal about things, but that bird needs to be able to stretch it's wings COMPLETELY from side of cage to side of cage.. flapping, ithout ANY toys or other things in it's way.
I have an african gray .. it's tiny compared to a macaw.. and the correct size cage.. it doesn't even fit through the doorways! I have to disassemble it to move his cage from room to room!
Don't get a f'in cage like you see in the pet stores. THe bird stores will usually have the right size.
Go on ebay.. and search for bird cages... email me if you need help finding one. I'll do at least that much to help you out. Worst case scenario, bird ends up in a cage all it's life.. at least it can have a proper sized one.

As you can see from the previous answers, they don't make the best pets. It's like having a 2 year old around for 75-100 years. Complete with screaming tantrums, hair (feather) pulling, and personal harm if it gets really pissed.
Get a book. Your question is to broad for anyone to completely answer here. Books have to be fact checked while any idiot can (and does) write anything on the internet.
Ask lots of questions, breeders and store owners say nice things because they want you to buy a bird from them at astromonical prices. Ask what is not so great about owning a big bird.
Lots of luck to you, you will need it.

I like the previous response, try getting a more simple bird. These birds live longer than their owners and require a great deal of attention. However Check this wikipedia link out for all the history and information you could possibly hope for....

Unless you have several years at keeping LARGE parrots you have no business with ANY MACAW, any COCKATOO or even an Amazon or Congo grey. It takes YEARS to learn the body language of a bird, it takes a great deal of time and personal one on one attention with any bird bigger than a finch and smaller than sometning like a conure.... I have been in bird rescue for the last 16 years and the big birds are turned in to rescues mostly becasue of inexperienced people who dont have a clue as to how to manage such a large bird. Large birds can break fingers. Large birds can and do take large pieces of flesh off your body if they take a dislike to the way you treat them
Large birds make LOUD NOISES, OFTEN. They do not naturally do cute tricks, they DO however destroy your home and you cannot leave them caged all the time or they will start screaming and screaming and screaming till they get out of the cage, then it is going to want something to do. Big birds like to chew on wood, they will destroy a $58.00 toy over night... they will eat the wood off your windows, they will eat your clothes, they will break telephones, eat keyboards. wires, cords. remote controls and they will actually expect you to endure this... and you MUST.
You are absolutely UNFIT to have a big bird. I have been taking in throw away birds from people who think the big birds are cool and think that they're goign to make a big hit with their associates because they dont have enough going for themselves so they get something that attracts attention to themselves.... Get a parakeet, or a tiel... MAcaws live to the ripe old age of 70 WITH EASE.... Do you have a family? THey are not fond of little kids, dogs, cats and often enough other birds.
They require fresh food, cooked, raw and FEW SEEDS. They require a GREAT deal of YOUR ATTENTION... do you work? Go to school? Who's going to be with your bird???? They do not do well alone... they will start screaming... shredding their feathers, biting you when you remember to pay attention to it and in general make your life hell.
It takes a very special person to keep a big bird satisfied and healthy.... Do you think your neighbors are going to like hearing the noise?:? I know you dont wanna hear this... but if you put the birds welfare above YOURS... and do your homework... go get around others who own big birds; learn how they act toward their owners... NO two birds act the same... if you do not have any experience with birds you have NO business with one. Start of small... I know you arent happy with being told this, but as a rescuer and caretaker of birds whose owners got them without so much as one day experience, I have had to teach these birds that not all humans hurt, or scream or hit them... or leave them alone during their days... or feed them a lousy diet of sunflower based SEEDS! Birds do NOT hardly ever eat seeds in the wild...
My birds, three Cockatoos and Ruby Macaw get at least ONE cooked meal with fresh veggies and fruit EVERY NIGHT... and often get a cooked breakfast TOO... are you ready to do that for your birds? Do you KNOW what makes a healthy diet for a macaw??? I doubt it.

I have 2 catalina macaws, I have had them for several years. these large birds are for serious owners only!!!! they are very needy birds, they require a lot of time and patience. they do have a tendency to be quite messy, you can not feed them chochlate, avacodos or use a frying pan that has that teflon coating, these things will kill them. my girls are sisters and have completely different personalitys, but they are fun to have around. both of my girls talk and have a extensve vocabulary, just remember they are like a sponge they absorb everything.......... good luck ;0)

unless u want to devote the next 75 years of your life and like cleaning bird poo, forget it. sure they are beautiful but they have a caw that will break your eardrums. start with a cockatiel or parakeet. then buy a book and study up. big commitment!
