The only way to properly adjust the color settings is with a test pattern. If the set is connected to a DVD player, you should get a test disc such as Avia http://www.ovationmultimedia.com/avia.html or Digital Video Essentials http://www.videoessentials.com/. They have color patterns and filters and instructions on how to use them. They also have patterns and instructions for setting contrast and brightness levels (these are more often misadjusted than color). For TV reception, it is harder to do since no stations (except HDnet) broadcast color test patterns. If you do not want to use a test disc, start with color controls in their "middle" position, then look at number of images from good sources and adjust for the most natural appearance of skin tones.

There is no "proper" color calibration for any tv. Set it to what ever you think looks best. You caould always buy an Avia set up disc for seting up the color.
