It usually takes at least 6-8 weeks for the uterus to shrink; breastfeeding helps contract it, which shrinks it faster. If you're not breastfeeding, nipple stimultion will also shrink it because you get the same effect on the contracting uterus.

For the uterus to shrink to its prepregnancy size (about the size of a pear) takes about 6 to 9 months. You will see however a significant reduction on the size of your belly after your body gets rid of all the extra fluids it took on during pregnancy, about 4 to 8 weeks.

Can take up to 6 weeks but in general it is a lot sooner than that!

My last pregnancy at 2 weeks post pardem my docs were surprised my uterus wasn't more normal size and found out I had to have a D&C to get rid of excess blood clots. Almost immediately after that it was normal size!

So it can vary person to person for a various number of reasons.

Most people are saying six weeks....but really, when you are in the hospital, they will keep coming in and pushing on your belly to make sure that it is doing what it should. I had some NASTY contractions AFTER the birth and it was the uterus doing its 'thing' to get rid of all the blood. Also, you should have follow up appointments with your OBGYN after.

And I dont know what is up with the response above about the vagina taking six weeks to go back.....don't believe everything you read!

40 days, and it doesn't exactly shrink down to the exact size it was before.
