If you mean praying to the God of the Bible: It is fellowship, conversing with God basically.
I pray mostly for the love of God (rom 5:5 says we got His love in our hearts when we received him so we can love others through his love, ) I want it to flow in greater measures, that's a bundle right there, you'll start having a burden even for things happening in other countries, your unlikeable boss or neighbor etc.plus faith works by love, otherwise is ineffective. Also for wisdom. I pray for protection (using Psalm91 for example and your name on it) and wisdom for my children, and for specific things for others, but most of my prayer is in tongues. I explain:
There are different kinds of prayer of consecration, dedication, prayer of faith Mark 11:22-24 (pray once in faith and the just thank God as if you had the answer) , intercession, petition and they have different rules like you would say in sports. There's praying in tongues or in the Spirit, this is when you learn about the gift, baptism of the Holy Spirit and can pray in a God given heavenly language, I experienced this when I was 30 Awesome! This way with the aid of the Holy Spirit you pray according to the perfect will of God.Acts 2, Luke 16:11, Acts 10:44-46,Acts 19:2 Luke11:11-13 Jude 1:21.etc.
For revelation, understanding, deeper in the things of God I also pray Paul's prayers Ephesians quite often chapters 1 to 3

Jesus taught his followers how to pray at Matthew 6:9-15.
The best thing to pray for is for God's Kingdom to come for it is the only government that will bring total peace to the earth. The whole Bible is about the eventual establishing of God's Kingdom, with Jesus ruling as our King.

You can pray for the land that you allows you to walk on, pray for the fresh air that we breathe, pray for the water that quenches your thirst, and pray for the food that keeps you energized. Thats what i think and pray for.

Pray what's in your heart. Pray if you feel thankful. Pray if you feel hopeful. Pray if you feel troubled. Pray for yourself and pray for others.

I think I'm better off praying for other people than myself. I don't always know what in my best interest. Other than that I ask God to guide me in my decisions...
