A little research before answering questions is always helpful. The maximum penalty I can find for killing a police dog is in Connecticut, where the penalty can be *up to* ten grand and ten years - and that's in a case where the dog is killed by you while it is performing its duties. There may be stiffer penalties out there, but I doubt it, as most states are far less severe. You can find a listing of the penalties in several states by visiting the source link below.
This means that you're either blowin' smoke or you or someone you know *thinks* they got a life sentence for killing a police dog. The only way I know of where that could happen would be in a state where (a) the killing of a police dog is a felony (it is not even a felony in many states) AND (b) that state also has some form of "Three Strikes" law, such as California. In a case like that, you could actually receive a life sentence for killing a police dog if you already had two felony convictions and the killing of the police dog was your third. And in that case you're not being sentenced to life for the specific crime, but rather for the cumulative nature of your crimes.
Lighten up, everybody. This is how urban myths get started.
Oh yes, as many others have pointed out, killing a civilian's dog is not OK. The penalties may not be as stiff as for killing a police dog, but they still may involve stiff fines and/or serious jail time.

The dog has had so much training, which is expensive, time consuming and difficult, they are considered invaluable members of the police force. Killing a police dog is considered to be killing a police officer.
Not that dogfighting is a good thing, or that civilian dogs shouldn't be valued, but it is the training that goes into it that makes the difference in the eyes of the law.

As a police dog is by all accounts a police officer, the punishment for killing one could be the same as for killing a human officer.
When you consider the amount of money that goes into training police dogs, any police force is likely to be very defensive of their canine officers.
Another difference is that (as despicable as it is) if a dog is killed in a dog fight, it has been killed by another dog.
Incidentally, I don't think any state says it's OK to kill a civilian's dog (unless it is attacking you).

Well, I personally think that anyone who hurts an animal should be shot (not literally- I think that they should be heavily punished), whether the animal is a police dog or not. BUT, the theory behind the stiffer punishment for killing police dogs is police dogs are considered to be "police officers." Since, typically, the penalty is stiffer for killing a police officer than killing a regular person, the penalty is stiffer for killing a police dog.

I've been told that the dogs are considered police officers, so killing one would have the same consequences as killing any other police officer.

The police station in my town paid $20,000 for their police dog. But I still don't think that's worth life in prison. If the dog is attacking without saying, "Halt, in the name of the law!" Then it didn't identify itself properly first, and you should have the right to defend yourself.
