Thats a good question, and confusing a lil. What I got from it is that no one who claims to be a child of God will continue to sin, intentionally. Being saved does not mean that we will sin no more. We will always sin until we die, but find forgiveness in God. However as we should be trying to live by God standards we should be trying to do things his way.

I can tell that you have experienced the Word of God. Wonderful is it not. Please, the very next time, you read your Bible, I pray that you'll ask the Father in Jesus Christ name of course, to send His Holy Spirit as Jesus Christ promised us, to open your eyes to the wisdom and complete understanding that is contained in His Word.
Remember, that some see where others are blind. Some hear where others are deaf. I know you can see and hear, so listen and open your eyes wide for Christ Jesus the Lord will be with you soon when you ask.
In 1st John 1:8 it says that: If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
You need to immediately go back and read the verses 1 through 7 and then 8 and 9 through 10. Do it now. You'll see that what is being said is that before Christ, we have sin. After Christ, through the Blood thereof, we don't. A word to the wise.
Going now to 1st John 3:9. Lets read with understanding what it says. It says, Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for HIS seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God
Did you catch it. Did you see with those new eyes you have, the word, "HIS". Who's HIS? Christ Jesus the Lord.
Thank you so much for allowing me the privilege to answer such a thought provoking question.><>

1 John 3:9 "No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God"
1 John 1:8-9 "If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness."
No it does not contradict itself. It deals with the duality of the christian life the old man and the new man. Paul put it this way --
"I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. For what I do is not the good I want to do; no, the evil I do not want to do—this I keep on doing. Now if I do what I do not want to do, it is no longer I who do it, but it is sin living in me that does it."
Romans 7:18-20

I believe that what John is saying that when we are born of God we have the ability through the power of the Holy Spirit be sinless but you have to remember that we still have to deal with this old flesh. that also explains the last verse you posted.
1Jo 2:1 My little children, these things write I unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

Note the KJV wording,
1 John 3:9
Whosoever is born of God doth not commit sin; for his seed remaineth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.
does not commit sin. when we remain close to God, sin no longer has a hold on us. We choose not to.
Weslip, but that is only we turn our eyes away from Him.

No. In chapter 3 He is explaining that our new nature, our "born-again nature" cannot sin. Every time a Christian sins it is because we are being led by our fallen, human nature.
Thus the key to walking in righteousness and holiness is being led by and submitted to the nature of Christ that is now within us. If we follow the sinful nature we will sin, if we follow the godly nature, we will be righteous. The nature of God inside of us cannot sin.
Chapter 1 shows us that in those times when we do follow our sinful nature, God will forgive us and cleanse us. He wants us to learn to live by our godly nature.

The sin has been removed, covered over by the blood of Christ.

He's talking about being born "again" through baptism, which forgives our previous sins.
