I've never heard of that before. At least, not in real life.
As far as Saving Private Ryan...Hollywood isn't a good source for practical information.

The Sole Survivor Policy describes a set of regulations in the US military that are designed to protect members of a family from the draft or combat duty if they have already lost family members in military service.
The need for regulations first caught public attention after the Sullivan brothers were all killed when the USS Juneau was sunk during World War II.
Since then each branch of the military has made its own policies with regard to separating immediate family members.

The first thing you should remember is the military recruiters get paid by the number of people get to enlist. They will tell you whatever you want to hear to get you in, and then your screwed. I had one tell me they could make me a general after I signed the papers (but of course not all of us are as stupid as they would have us think).
I really do not know what the regulations are, considering alot of families have lost their children in Iraq. If you do not want to go to an area where war is going on, the best advice I can give you is just not to join, but if you do decide, understand that there is the possibility that you could be sent to an area where a war is going on.

False. It used to be, back in the days of the draft, that if a man was an only child he was spared from being drafted (although he was still free to volunteer). Now that we have an all volunteer force, thats old news. But if a person volunteers he or she is in it. Afterall, what is the purpose of the army? Its not a tea party, its to fight and win wars. Why have someone serve in the military and be exempted from the war?
I know, i know, females are still excluded from many direct combat roles. But they still go to war. Maybe not on the front lines, but they are there.

If you are an only child and you chose to go to war that is your decision and they wont tell you "no, you cant go" but that does apply to only children for the draft. The government will not draft an only child to war. But of course, like you said, things change and they are probably different by now, but last i heard, thats how it was.

No it is not true. Their is a "Sole Survivor Policy" If you and your brother are serving and your brother dies they will "try" to give you the opportunity to get out of combat. If you stay in the military at that point it's over you are just like anyone else.
does not apply to only child

Don't put much faith in what recruiters tell you they mostly lie.....and if they told you that you wouldn't be sent to war because you were an only child...he lied. Don't believe what hollywood preaches either...it was a movie not fact.

That is what is spose to happen .If there is more than 1 male child they will not send them all to war...So If you are an only child and you inlist...(which is fine) They aren't spose to send you in Harms way. But there are plenty of Jobs in the military that are state side. ( in the U.S. borders.) That you could do..But with the terrorist and all ----You could very well be killed with out ever leaveing the U.S.

The military does not consider if you are an only child, they will consider if you are an only SURVIVING child, meaning that you have already lost your siblings in combat.
