I have a DSH (Domestic Short Hair) female. She is not spayed. We have a DLH (Domestic Long Hair) male cat who is neutered. When she is in heat, he does mate with her. Is she ripping out her fur in preparation for babies?

Also we think we have felt lumps in that area. Two on her lower belly in between the hips and pelvis region. (Or are those her ovaries?) And one at the base of her ribs.

If you people actuall read the question you would know she can't be pregnant, and obviously this is not normal.

How old is your male cat, and how long ago was he neutered??? Male cats that are neutered after they are sexually mature (6 mos or older) are still fertile for about a month after their surgery... so he could (in theory) get her pregnant if all those conditions are present. Otherwise she may be experiencing false pregnancy, though that wouldn't explain why she's ripping out her hair. Cats don't make nests with their fur....

Actually it sounds like she may be experiencing (and reacting to) stress about something.

As for the lumps, there's no way you could be feeling her ovaries, as they are very tiny (I've seen thousands). It is possible she may have a condition called Pyometra, which means her uterus could be swollen and filled with pus. This could be deadly, so you should take your cat to the vet. It's also possible that she has tumors... either condition could be the reason she's stressing enough to pull out her fur.

If a cat is pregnant, at some point a ring of hair will fall out around each nipple - this just happens, the cat doesn't actively pull it out. The swellings could be mammary glands.

If the male is really neutered, she can't be pregnant unless she's sneaking out (or there's a bright star in the East). In that case, I'd be very worried that the lumps you're feeling are mammary tumors.

Spay her. Those aren't ovaries and could be breast cancer . . . ovaries are up next to the kidneys and can't be felt from outside the cat. Every heat cycle a cat has increases the chance for breast cancer and many other cancers. There are many reasons to have a cat spayed and they are not all related to pet overpopulation. It may not be too late . . . take her to your vet and have her checked and schedule her surgery ASAP. Many areas have low cost spay/neuter programs if finances are a problem.
