She loves to eat the ice, but I know I did when I was little and now I have sensitive teeth. I'm just wondering what, if anything, it does to her enamel.

No, it is not all right for anyone to chew on ice. Ice weakens the teeth and doing so will result in weakening the crowns. Chewing on ice may require braces in the future as well as many crown replacements. I suggest you stop the child from chewing on ice before it becomes a habit.

No. Ice and teeth don't mix!

While your 2-year-old is only ruining baby teeth while chewing ice, the habit might continue forward to the adult teeth.

As one chews ice, the ice drops the temperature of the teeth drastically to such a point that cracks develop in the teeth. I found out the hard way and have had more than one tooth chip down one of those fissures.

My fissures were pointed out by a dentist using an ultraviolet (UV) light. And, because of those fissures, teeth that might have otherwise been filled again could not be filled when a filling came loose, but had to be capped (four caps so far).

I wish I'd never chewed ice. It wasn't worth it.

Answer: NO
If he is teething still and is seeking relief, put a chew-ring in the refigerator for a while. Chewing ice will destroy the teeth and in a two-year-old presents a serious choking hazard(don't let somone tell you it will eventually melt if he does...it will melt, but do you want to wait around for it to melt while he's choking?). Don't let him form the habit of chewing ice, because as he grows up he will crack his permanent teeth. Its not a question of if, but when. I see it all-week long, so trust me on this one.

Nope. It is not good for the teeth of any person of any age to chew on ice. At least that is what some dentist told my Mom, and she impressed it on me.

I've done it all my life, never had a problem. BUT, my dentist tells me it will chip the porcelain off my teeth. I guess it's a common problem, so maybe it's not a good idea for your kid.

I've been rubbing my teeth on the toilet every night before bed to compensate for the lost porceline. To date, not a problem.

Except these damn sores on my lips. And why does everything smell like urine!?!?

I let my 2 year old chew on ice when he was little. It did not hurt him, as I was a fussy mother and I asked his pediatrician about everything. It had no negative effect on him. If I were you, I would ask my pediatrician rather than take strangers' advice.

Bad idea, unless you like dental work and broken teeth. The cold makes teeth - especially small ones - brittle. Add the force of chewing, and one day... CRACK. With hollaring to follow.

If he does, always be close and make sure he doesn't get a really big piece b/c he might choke on it. I don't think it should hurt his teeth, though.
