Your ears have to pop. The air pressure in your head needs to be the same as the air pressure around you. Your ears are the way for the pressure to equalize. To help equalize the pressure, hold your nose close and then try to blow air through it. That's the way divers equalize the pressure when they go deep

I found this one out last time I was on a plane; Get a stewardess to pour boiling hot water over two napkins, then drain it (so its still wet, but not dripping) and then put them in two different plastic cups.. then put the cups to your ears and it will go away immediately :)

Chew gum, swallow lots too (not your gum, just swallow). Some people plug their nose and then try to blow out of it - I don't recommend this because you are forcing mucus up into your ear canals (yes, you are) and this can lead to painful ear infections. Yawning works well too.

hold your nose and blow. you don't have to do this the whole time, but every once in a while to clear your ears. this won't prevent the popping but it will help. there really is no way to prevent the popping.

Yawn and breathe out your nose on exhale. Chewing gum helps for some people. Or pinch your nose, then try pushing air out your plugged nostrils gently.
