A Fedora is appropriate with a suit, usually at some type of a swing dance or costume party. It can be worn with a Zoot Suit (1940s) or a more conservative 1950s style of suit. Suspenders look good with this type of outfit. Wingtip shoes look very nice with this!

Business casual and above in formality. I don't think t-shirts, jeans or shorts. But, just about anything else. Fedoras are such classics.
