Min. Schnauzers, Toy Poodles, Min. Poodles, Maltese, Yorkies, Havanese, Low Chin (I know there are others but can't think of them right now :^) are "low-shedding" breeds. I think that Purina has a website that helps you choose a dog breed to suit you.

You can also go to the national breed club (http://www.akc.org) for the breed(s) you narrow your search to and research those dogs more carefully before making a decision. Avoid buying a puppy from newspaper ads (unless you're very savvy and know the questions to ask to see if they're a good breeder). Also, avoid buying from a pet store chain . . . all national breed clubs' codes of ethics prohibit their members from selling to pet stores, so the puppies there are the reason that puppy mills exist. Contact your local all breed club or a local breed club that specializes in the breed you decide upon . . . those folks will know the breed and will be able to help you select a healthy puppy with a stable temperament.

First you make a list of the traits you require in a dog. Then you consult a book: "The Perfect Match" a dog buyer's guide by Chris Walkowicz. This is an honest book about dogs (a rare thing I know) it will give you good and bad qualities. Then you take all your information and go to a dog show to see the real thing in person and talk to the people who own and breed these dogs.

Below are links to dog breed selectors. You answer some questions about your lifestyle, what size dog you want, and if you want it to shed and it tells you what breed of dog will do the best with you. Try them all because they may give slightly different breeds and ask slightly different questions.

Maybe a toy poodle, or a lonng haired Chihuahua. People think the long haired chis will shed more, but that is not the case. They shed very little.

why buy! there are tons of Non-shedding dogs that end up in shelters every day!
or you could try a rescue group.
here are a few rescue groups of non-shedding dogs.
ALSO by rescuing you wont have to foot the bill for shots/spaying or neutering, its already done. plus the dogs are temperament tested so the rescue group will know what dog would do better for you home environment. ALL of my dogs are rescues...i will NEVER BUY WHILE SHELTER PUPS DIE!

Personally, I would recommend going to your local shelter and adopting one. They have all different kinds to choose from and they always are getting new ones in. You can even find pure breed dogs there. So save a life and alot of money while you're at it. I've never been disappointed with a dog I have gotten from a shelter. They seem to know you saved them and they are so eager to please you. Not to mention all the love.

My husband and I live outside of Austin and own a chiuauaha. Yeah they have a bad reputation for being yippy and snippy but they are great indoor pets. Mine is named Willie Nelson and is almost three years old. He is trained to go to the bathroom in a kitty litter container out in my garage. He is very loyal and barks at strangers when looking out our window. He sleeps in our bed at night and is very content to sleep at our feet. He is very sweet and loves to be pet, and he has very short, low maintenance hair. He does shed a little but nothing a regular vaccum can't handle. Since he is an indoor dog we feed him low fat science diet so he doesn't get fat. He likes to go in the car and he does like to go for walks. He is very much so a part of our family, kinda like a kid I guess.

I'm replying to your Steak & Shake Frisco Sauce question, since you don't allow email messages! :-)

A review in the Fort Worth Star Telegram says the Frisco sauce is bottled Catalina French dressing, straight out of the bottle. FYI

I'd suggest a dachsund. I have one adn love her dearly. Very smart, trainable to potty outside or on piddle-pads, very short coat and no shedding! They love their people, and don't like to be left alone much, so if you're going to be gone 9+ hours/day, maybe skip a dachsund then.
