My 16 month old daughter can find the tiniest piece of anything on the floor and it automatically goes in her mouth.

This is because children learn through exploration and the best way for babies to explore in the early years is through their mouth. It allows them to experience taste, texture, hardness, softness, etc. So, try to be patient and ensure that your daughter can explore this way in the safest way possible.

The oral stage is a developmental stage all children go through. It is a tactile way to explore and get to know their surroundings. It is best to let them do it but watch what they put in their mouths so they don't choke or suck on something filthy. This is also the normal time for the use of a pacifier but the pacifier should be weaned out by the time the child is three to prevent damage to the shape of the mouth, teeth, and verbal development.

It varies with each child. It was the same for me, but my little brother hardly tried to put anything in his mouth. It's just because they're new to the world and want to try things out. They have hardly any experience with bad or good tasting food, or even what food is so they try to eat everything and anything they can get their hands on.

This is how babies learn. First they pick things up with their fingers and feel them, then they put them in their mouths. Just a baby's nature. This is when you want to really keep your floor clean! Good luck!

how about the nose and ears? i dont know how many times we ended up at the dr. to get raisins, bubble gum, and just about everything else removed. its just the way they learn and discover, althoughit can be very dangerous. its ok just as long as you keep an eye on them so the dont choke.

Taste and touch are a part of human nature. They are just curious. Not to mention they are usually teething and it feels good to chew on things.

Isn't that just lovely? My daughter does it as well. They are just engaging all of their senses in experiencing new things. And our pediatrician said that as she gets older, don't be surprised if she starts sticking things in her nose and ears too. So much to look forward to.....

I really want to know that too. My daughter is almost 3. she KNOWS what to eat and what not to. she eats paper, books, chews on plastic, just about anything if she feels like it.. i've always let her known not to. we don't chew gum, so she's not trying to imitate. but at first it was about looking, feeling, tasting, discovering. now, i think it's just fun,.

babies/toddlers are more oral in their senses-they use their mouth to figure things out-as a child gets older they develop their other senses
