I am a muscial theatre junkie. And it depends if you want classic music (from Oklahome, Singing in theRain, Camelot, etc...) or if you would prefer recent Broadway hits (Rent, Wicked, The Light in the Piazza, etc...).

If you are already a singer and have a teacher then they should be able to help you pick out good audition pieces that suit your voice and character type.

If you don't have a teacher and just want to try and break into the business without a teacher or an agent, it is going to be tough. Start out small - go for local stuff first in your area. Then try breaking through into off-Broadway shows - you will need to work your way up.

If you are not familiar with musicals whatsoever, then your best bet is to listen to the Yahoo Radio Show Tunes station - it will give you the info on the musical that the song is from. Or even try Broadway Radio online - great website! And don't forget that you local video rental store has lots of filmed musicals - like Singing in the Rain, An American in Paris, Oklahoma, Carousel, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers, Rent, The Producers, Guys and Dolls (I could go on and on and on and on and on and.....)
You basically need to find your place in the muscial theatre world's scheme of things. Once you do, it will be muich easier to find audition pieces.

Good luck!! And see you on Broadway!

That would depend on what style of music and/or musical you like. There are classics, such as the songs from "The Music Man" or "Oklahoma." And there are more recent hits, such as "Cats." And there are, of course, some very recent hits, such as "The Producers."

Some great song hits:

Till There Was You
The Surrey with the Fringe on Top
Comedy Tonight
I Don't Know How to Love Him
Memory
I Want to be a Producer

"Getting into Broadway"?? What do you mean...performing or something else? Since I'm a prof. musician, I'm probably qualified to answer your question. Drop me a line at keyboard.king@yahoo.com and let me know what type of music you specifically like.
