The proper application of Authority is a part of that job. Authority involves staying in control of a situation. Being a control-freak, as part of a job description, can make people cocky. It could also be experience. 'I've tackled and cuffed guys bigger and tougher than you', one might be thinking. Think of it like this: they are the Good Guys. They keep people worse than us off of the streets and locked up.

I asked the same question only in a different way sometime ago. Maybe we should rephrase the question. In the time elapsed since I asked the question, I have been thinking. The reason, I have been thinking is because I got some really screwy answers. Apparently some don't want or refuse to see what you and I do. They are doing their job. They have to put up with a lot of unpleasantness. They are underpaid. You (meaning me ) have a bad attitude. Bla bla bla. were some of the answers I received.
Most answers were, I am reasonably sure, came from law enforcement people themselves or someone who has
emotional ties with them.

So lets ask. Why would anyone want to be in law enforcement?
The answer would probably be, "to make a difference". That is a very good answer . Unfortunately, in truth, it applies to about 10% of the whole. For the 90% remaining, though they may give the same answer , it is not accurate. What is accurate, they truly enjoy pushing people around. (unchallenged)

When they try to act like they understand your situation, when you know good and well they don't even know!!! Or, when they trail you 'cause you driving a nice ride, then pull you over...hostility and all (For brotha's it's D.W.B.) now that's cocky!

Oh, another thing that makes them cocky is that all they have to have in order to be a cop is a High School Diploma...and they act all "scholastic" when they pull you over and you're the one with a bachelor's degree...(sorry, got personal)!

There are good cops and bad cops...my uncle, who was a cop, told me that a bad cop is one of the worst things in the world, because they have authority. As far as your question of why they are cocky...it's not that...they have a high degree of self-assurance. The bad cops are cocky and inconsiderate...and thank goodness there are very few bad cops.

First off, some are not, but I have to agree with you that most are at least sometimes. Some are that way all the time. I honestly think they know they're not smart enough to be engineers, law professionals, medical professionals, financial professionals, etc., so this is their way of getting off and feeling powerful and feeling important.

most of them aren't it's just what they catch you doing that makes them that way because if they answer to certain calls they get a raise or something like that, also the guys who talk to me are cool they don't talk to us while we do things and only when we start causing major damage do they just say chill out, thats exactly what they say i mean i picked a fight with a kid downtown newark and the police sat and watched as a beat him up

I believe the rookies are that way because they are on a power trip.

However, with the others, I think that they have to appear that way to an extent. They can not look timid, or weak. If they did, that could put them in danger.

If they are cocky to start with, they will be cocky as officers. If they are not cocky to start with, then they will probably not be cocky when officers. It is pretty much that simple.

I'm glad they are the way they are. Who would want a little mealy-mouthed law enforcement officer protecting them. I want someone who is in control of the situation.
