They probably use a lot of different verses. I use this passage to answer people's questions about speaking in tongues.

1 Corinthians 12:7 But the manifestation of the Spirit is given to every man to profit withal. 8 For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; 9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; 10 To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues: 11 But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.

1 Corinthians 12:27 Now ye are the body of Christ, and members in particular. 28 And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. 29 Are all apostles? are all prophets? are all teachers? are all workers of miracles? 30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret?

Of course, then those people who are caught up in the sin of spiritual pride will stubbornly insist that while not everyone is given the "gift of speaking in tongues", that it is a necessary "evidence" of having received the Holy Spirit. Then they will run through their list of instances in the book of Acts in an attempt to "prove" that this doctrine is correct. If you show them a passage where tongues are not mentioned they will say that just because it doesn't say they spoke in tongues doesn't mean that they didn't.

That type of attitude is energized by seducing spirits who seek to bring division into the body of Christ and to encourage the sin of pride in those who are subceptible to their leadings. It's sad but true. :o(

I like what one Pastor whom I respect and who speaks in tongues has to say about that. He says that the evidence of being filled with the Holy Spirit isn't in speaking in tongues in a meeting on Sunday. It's found in controlling your tongue as you speak in your native language the rest of the week.

Numbers 11:24-25

Moses went out and reported the words of the LORD to the people. He gathered seventy of the people's elders and stationed them around the Tent. Then the LORD came down in a cloud and spoke to him; He drew upon the spirit that was on him and put it upon the sevent elders. And when the spirit rested upon them they spoke in ecstasy, but did not continue.
