Firefly larvae feed mostly on earthworms, snails and slugs. They can detect a snail or slug slime trail, and follow it to the prey. After locating the prey, they inject an anesthetic-type substance through hollow ducts in their mandibles into the prey, which immobilizes it, allowing the larvae to digest it. Multiple larvae may attack large prey items, such as earthworms. Sometimes they scavenge dead snails, worms and similar organic matter.
Adults have mouthparts suggestive of predation (long sickle-shaped mandibles), though they rarely eat other insect matter. They usually feed on plant nectar and pollen, though some do not eat at all.

Lightning bugs eat electricity, preferably from power lines :-)
Seriously, "Larvae voraciously feed on other insects, earthworms, slugs, and snails. They track slime trails to prey and stun them with poison injected by their mandibles. Adult diet is not well-documented."
From another website:
"After hatching the larvae spend the summer eating tiny insects, larvae, and even slugs and snails. They then dig small tunnels in which they spend the winter. As the soil warms up in spring they come out to eat again, pupate and eventually emerge as fireflies. It is believed that some adult fireflies do not eat. Other kinds feed on pollen and nectar."
I love fireflies. They are such a wonderful part of summer.
