Just look at some of the answers, now the Catholics has become a denomination, a sect. Your question is even misleading. And little by little out of the blue they were called as non Christians but only Catholics. What a pity this gullibility can get people into. CATHOLIC CHRISTIANITY is the core, the heart of Christianity and the rest are sects.
Catholics were defending Christianity and offered their lives when all of us have not been conceived yet and now some would argue that Catholics are not Christians? Who the heck told them that? Do they really think they will ever see themself enjoying wonderful lives and freedom in the west if the catholics did not protect and defend against the Moors european invasion that has reached Spain, Turkey and the Balkans? Yes there were Crusade and Inquisition but all were to defend Christianity from barbaric slaughter and war can really be cruel. When someone attacks you with a sword, will you say to yourself that, no, I can't kill him because I am Christian. War is death and when people go to war they expect to kill and get killed. Many will refute this but that is the whole truth and nothing but the truth.

DIFFERENCE ? Catholocism is a form of Christianity . It's not different , it's just a sect or a division of Christianity that has seperate beliefs . From my theology , Catholics believe in the diety of Mary which mainstream Christians reject . They believe that the POPE as God's representative on earth is infallible . Their belief comes from Matthew 16:18 . And because of this they consider St. Peter the first POPE . Catholics still honor Jesus Christ as the head of the Church , but their dogma and their theology differs from say a Baptist , a Lutheran or a Presbyterian . To be considered a " Christian " then one must belive in Jesus Christ and that he was the only BEGOTTEN Son of GOD , and catholics do , however their bible , the Apocrypha is several books longer than those that other Christian religions use , and their customs and ceremonies are different than other Christian religions . There is NO difference between a Catholic and a Christian , they are Christians , they just worship GOD according to their practiced customs and traditions and consider the POPE as the head of the Church .

Catholicism is a branch of Christianity. Catholicism was supposedly founded by the apostle Peter. The Roman Catholic church was the only church until the 1500s when Martin Luther started the Lutheran church and King Henry the VIII started the Anglican church. All the protestant churches evolved from these two.

This is a very good question. I went to Catholic school, though I am Jewish. Catholics teach that they directly descend from Jesus' time (which I think is true). They teach that they are the original Christians and all other Christians are protestants. It gets interesting when you talk to other denominations. Most other denominations (Bapstist, Luterhan, Episcopal, etc) are more or less unified. They believe that the only ticket to heaven is belief in Jesus Christ as your lord and savior basically. That and only that will get you to heaven, whether you be a murderer or a holy man. (Catholics believe you have to confess your sins also). While Christians ("Protestants") believe the same thing, their services are different and that makes up the MAIN differences in the religions. They believe to be Christian is to believe that only belief in Jesus gets you to heaven. Because Catholics believe you must confess and such, Christians believe Catholics are not Christians. Kind of confusing, but there's your answer. Funny thing is many Catholics don't know they aren't considered Christian.

Catholicism is a subset of Christianity at large.
There are theological differences between Protestantism and Roman Catholicism. And there are theological differences between the New Testament Christianity and Roman Catholicism.
Many Catholics are true followers of Jesus Christ. Some are not.
(Similarly many Protestants are true followers of Jesus Christ. Some are not.)
Cordially,
John

Well, lets see. For hundreds and hundreds of years there was only one christain church. This church succeeded in civilizing western civilization and establishing a great and vasr, unified empire that fought back invading hordes of pagans and muslims, thus preserving western culture.
But, alas, there was a king that didn't like his wife, and went on a little ego trip when the local bishop said he couldn't cut off her head and get a younger, better looking wife. So, he created his own religion where cutting off your wifes head is ok. Then there was a dissatisfied German monk that wanted to have sex with the nuns, so he started his own religion. Once others saw this was possible hundreds of disgruntled ex-catholics created religions that suited them better than catholicism. Thus was born the protestant revolution. Its called PROTESTant by the way because they were PROTESTING the catholic church.

Catholicism is one type of Christianity. They were the first formal none Jewish Christian church, since the original christians were jews. Protestants came later, although I don't remember off hand of Anglicans branched off first (since King Henry wanted a divorce, and the Pope would not grant him one). All the other forms came later
