Can they?. Yes. They don't need to. Every word you say and hear is recorded. by the phone carrier anyway.

yes they can from the tower it gets transmitted to and from to the next cell phone watch ncis or csi hell even law and order they all have to base it off of true and real things... now weather or not the copes are going to truly trace it for no reason is highly unlikely but if they have probable cause they can do this because it is free air space...NOT a base line phone in which they would need a warrant because it IS directly from them to you...

yes, all police taps are done at the phone company office, not at the house ( like in the old movies)

The phone company merely connects and sends the phone signal of the tapped phone to a phone/and or recording device connection of the police.

So all they do is get your number tapped at the cell phone company.

Your neighbors can sometimes hear your cell phone conversations! I would suggest that if you have something to say that you don't want anyone else to know. Then say it in person -- not over any phone. Cell or land line.

CAN they? Yes

MAY they? Legally, only with permission. It's called a warrant, and they have to show probable cause, to a judge, describing an illegal act that will take place partially over the phone.

according to a radio talk show caller who claimed to work in the wireless industry, they can not only tap your phone but with just your number they can turn on your phone if it's off, set it to auto answer, connect and answer without it ringing, and listen serupitiously to converstaions taking place within earshot of your phone.

Yes, upon approval of the Police Deprtment's petition from a competent court of law to do the same. If it is a matter of national security and concern, they can.
