The movies only covered about half the book content, and cut lots of characters.

Start with The Hobbit, and then read Lord of the Rings.

Well, I tend to give details, so if you think you don't wnt to know that much, don't read mine.

But, in the first book, they skip a part where the Hobbits meet up with a character called Tom Bombadil, and then get captured by Barrow-wights. The events concerning the Ents has a different situation in the book s than what happened in the movies, and Saruman doesn't die until the very end, when he has captured the Shire and made slaves out of the Hobbits, after the Merry, Pippin, Sam, and Frodo return and return the Shire to its original state. He is killed by Grima Wormtongue, who is then shot by Hobbit archers. Thats pretty much it...I suggest that, after you read the series, read the appendices at the end of the Return of the King. They go into the back-story alot and brings things into a better light.

Well, there is a whole big chunk after Sauron is defeated, where they basically clean up the rest of the mess. Book is great.

Wouldn't it be more fun to read it and find out for yourself?
