Hello:
This answer is in response to your question posted about the safety of xanax and the death of a 24 year old person in good health.
Xanax (alprazolam) is in a category of controlled drugs called benzodiazapines. Others in this category include valium (diazepam), ativan (lorazepam) to name a few. They are commonly used for anxiety and panic type disorders but can also be used for sleep and in some circumstances as muscle relaxants (valium being the one used most often for this purpose).
These drugs are very safe when used as directed by a physician.
The problem arises when someone misuses the drug(s), ie. takes more than the recommended dosage, mixes the drug with alcohol or another drug that has a sedative or depressive effect on the central nervous system, ie. including over the counter antihistamines, cold medications, even some herbal preparations can be harmful when mixed with this class of drugs. Even drinking grapefruit juice with xanax (alprazolam) can have an untoward effect.
I dont know the history of this person, how much xanax that he/she took, what other meds or herbals were being used, etc.
This class of drugs is a controlled substance because it has a potential for abuse, misuse and carries with it a potential for tolerance and addiction.
Mixing xanax and alcohol together can be lethal in some circumstances.

Tylenol can kill you if you take more than what is prescribed in a 4-6 hour period. Xanax mixed with alcohol or any other meds can kill someone in good health. http://www.erowid.org/experiences/exp.php?ID=15936

Anything could kill the wrong person if they are allergic, overdose, mix meds, drink, etc.

How much did he take? He could have had a bad heart or mixed it with other drugs.
