Mutts are great dogs too and like you said, usually have less health problems than purebreds. A lot of people want the purebreds tho. It is a matter of tatse.

Any large dog can have hip dysplasia - mutt or purebred. Mutts are usually produced by accidental breeding by careless people - not because the parents were great dogs that should have been mated to improve the breed.

The advantage of a purebred is that you can go to a responsible breeder who has the hips and elbows of the parents and grandparents of the litter x-rayed and certified by the OFA. That way, you've got a better chance that your pup wont develop hip or elbow displaysia. Too many young dogs have to be put down because of bad hips. Does the breeder offer a health guarantee? Does the breeder ask you questions about whether you'd be a good owner for their pup? If they don't, they may not care enough about where their pups are going.

With purebred dogs, you're not playing genetic roulette. You know what the size, color, coat and temperament of the dog is going to be - and whether or not it will fit into your lifestyle. For example, you don't get a Shepherd or a Shepherd mix if you live in a noisy apartment - they'll be barking all the time.

Find a good breeder by going to www.akc.org or talking to people at dog shows. You can also find info about the breed clubs on the akc site - they probably have a rescue group where you can get an older dog for less money. The best breeders will be members of their breed club, promoting healthy dogs with great temperaments. They should ask you a bunch of questions to make sure their puppy will be getting a good home. If all a "breeder" seems to care about is whether your check will clear, you can be sure he won't care a week later when the pup is dying from distemper or parvo and you want your money back.

Whatever you do, DON'T go to a pet shop, a flea market or buy one sight-unseen off the Internet!!!! You'll pay top dollar for what is usually a poor quality puppy mill dog. And you'll be supporting one of the cruelest industries in the country. The breeding animals are often kept in deplorable conditions - spending their entire lives in small wire-bottomed cages. They probably haven't been vaccinated against contagious diseases or tested for any health or temperament problems or genetic diseases - that costs money and cuts into their profits. A female is often bred every time she comes into heat. When her poor little body can't take it any more, she is often clubbed in the head and tossed into a dumpster or an open ditch. Most puppy mills ship their pups to pet stores at wholesale prices and many pups die before they even get there.

These so-called "breeders" have now figured out that they can use the internet to ship a dog directly to the customer and thus make more money by cutting out the middleman. If you buy a dog from out of state, good luck getting your money back if there's something wrong with the pup. These people count on you becoming instantly attached to the poor little guy and being willing to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars at the vet to treat whatever is wrong with him.

Different breeds to have different medical risks. Finding a dog that wasnt imbred is easy. You get the pure bred from a breeder and not from the store. You see the entire litter and mom and dad. You see the akc papers of mom and dad. It gives 5 years of ancestory history. If you really do homework first finding a good quality pure bred is easy.

However imagine if each pure breed has its own behavioral and medical risks then what does a mutt consist of. Most of the time you dont know what all the mixes are so a precious little mutt might show pitt bull type qualities or health problems you couldnt expect. Allowing dogs to mix and or imbreed is abuse. The pup suffers with defects and many other problems. Its just irresponsible from the owner.

No question about it- Mutts. There are enough unwanted animals in this world. It's been my experience that mutts just make all around better pets. No offense to anyone, but I've always found mutts smarter and more eager to learn and please. While there are many very good breeders out there, there are so many out there just trying to make money and abusing and neglecting the animals they supposedly care so much about. You see it all the time on the news. If everyone would just give their local shelter a try, they might find a dog that they can't live without. If not, then find a good breeder if your heart is set on a certain breed.

It depends on what the mix is for one thing. Mostly, it is the big dog breeds that have problems with their hips (dobies, german shepards, labs, etc). Inbreeding is usually caused by breeders that are only interested in the $ $ $ so they don't monitor the number of matings their dogs have. If the breed is from good stock you shouldn't have any problems except for what the particular breed is genetic of. Mutts do seem to have a longer life expectancy maybe due to the fact that their mixture of breeds make them stronger to fight off any disease that a normal breed might succumb to.

Inbreeding is to be used by experienced breeders only. It is the best way to lock-in desired qualities. If not for inbreeding, the seeing-eye foundation would be lost. Large boned joints are the most prone to hip dysplasia. With pure breds you can tell temprament and looks more easily. A mutt is like buying a used car: what you see is what you get.

I'm a vet tech. Pure breds always have more health issues. I always say go for a mutt. Even if it looks more pure. You are more likely to have a healthier dog. Not only do a lot of pure breds have hip problems, but also heart issues and many other serious problems. hhope this helps!

Larger boned purebreds are frequently plagued by hip displasisa. It is definitely due to inbreeding. This is one of many problems pure bred dogs have. Mutts are generally healthier and live longer.

some breeds are prone to hip dysplasia and a little research will let you know the troublesome breeds. Inbreeding leads to all sorts of nasty problems. As for mutts, they are just as deserving of love as your snootiest pure breed.

Purebreds are fine as long as you get them from a responsible breeder NOT a backyard breeder. REsponsible breeders track the dog's bloodline to prevent inbreeding, and test for genetic problems.

Mutts can reduce some inbred problems, but not all. For example, rottweilers and german shepherds both have genetic hip problems. A german shepherd/rottweiler mixed puppy has more of a chance of having hip problems than a purebred would, because the breeder would not have tested the parents for problems before breeding.

Stick with mutts. Our poor Lhasa Apso had dysplasia and suffered terribly his whole life. I would never buy a pure breed again. In this case the breeder was with a kennel club, and even that did not protect me.
