Because when a soldier is going into battle, the blue part with the stars has to face toward the battle as they walk/ride. etc.
Have sewn many patches on uniforms in the last 5 years, and didn't know that answer either until about 3 years ago.

It is backwards because when you walk the flag needs to be swaying in the wind in the proper direction and that is how you see it on a flagpole. Stars toward the center. If you happen to have a small flag around put it up to your shoulder going in both directions and you will see how silly it looks to have it the other way.

These are the times the flag "appears" backwards:
When in a photo - many times media reverses images to make it look better in print
When representing both sides of a flag - as on a vehicle, aircraft, both shirt sleeves - The image will show the flag in flight ...on one side of the vehicle or arm represents the front of the flag, and the other side represents the back side of the same image...just as if it were one flag.
I've heard that this represents "one nation under God" and represents loyalty to ONE FLAG (just both sides of one flag).

It isn't backwards. The flag is at a different angle because the stars are supposed to be closer tho the heart.

Picture it being flown into battle as carried by a flag bearer, Civil War style or Revolutionary War style when flags were still carried into battle. The Union is first and leads the way.
