I've been on Z-Pack for 5 days and am out of it (zithromycin). My tonsils are still swollen and red and its hard to swallow. Is there any other relief for swollen tonsils besides salt water? Would ibuprophen work since its an anti-inflammatory? I've had swollen tonsils and a sore throat for 6 days now and its really getting annoying!!!

Hi there,

I have had a painful sorethroat for ages now and am always prone to swollen tonsils to the point were eating is just too painful. I also went on these antibiotics which didnt work for me either, but dont forget viral infections are not cured by antibiotics!! The doc did a swob on my throat for bacteria and they found that I did not have an infection so the symptoms were viral. Why they didnt do this before giving me 3 weeks of antibiotics I dont know as it would of being much easier. Anyway I am an expert on sore throat and the best think to do is to use either Solphadol desolved in water and gargel with it (perscription only) and works on the most painful throats. Also if you go to a chemist they sell medicated mouth wash (again may be perscription only) and they are really good. I have had about 4 on perscription and do feel like they are burning your throat at first but they do actually ease the pain. I had ulcers all down my throat and was in tears with the pain so my doctor gave me these pain killers to use. salt water helps to kill the germs but will not take the pain away I am afraid. I know how you are suffering though so you are not on your own. Ask your doctor about the solphdol as its very good and usually used on people with tonsillitis.

good luck
x

Yes an ibuprofen will help a little. You could also try to get some throat spray or lozenges that helps to numb them a little. Do keep gargling with the salt water it does really help.
I would also give a call to your doctor on monday if it is still not any better since you started the z-pac. He may start you on a different medicine. I have never had a sore throat be so painful after 6 days and medicine.

If your troat is swelling it could be an allergic reaction to something you ate or medicine at that is very serious i never had tonsillitis so i dont know but you might be able to tell the difference but if it gets hard for you to swallow anything including your own spit then go to the hospital right away

I would suggest returning to your doctor. The infection that you have may be resistant to the medication that you have taken and you will need something stronger. Besides salt water, I would also suggest eating crushed ice and continue with the anti inflammatory. You may need to have them remove but only after a course of medications have proven to fail as well as more tests have been conducted. I hope that you begin to feel better soon.

maybe get them removed. tonsilitis sounds more accurate since your z pack is done and your still sick. either way, i'd call your pharmacist. there was a time i had to work no matter what, and i asked my pharmacist what to buy over the counter that could treat certain symptoms. and he was very helpful.

If you are on Zpac and nothing good has happened then you need to go back. you could have lymph nodes that are messed up or worse.
