I have a female miniature dachshund, and I am thinking about breeding her. I am not sure, but I think she is about to go into heat again. She has a very distinct smell "down there," and she recently started humping the cat. Also, she is over a year old and this will be her second heat. Is she old enough to breed?

buy some breeding books and talk to other miniature dachsund breeders first. speak to your vet and he will help you "map out" her cycle. realistically, she is a little young to start breeding but opinions vary.

1. Why are you going to breed her? If you think you will make money, forget it. If you are going to do it right, breeding does not make money. Only people who want to improve the breed should breed. Doing it right includes testing for diseases that are common to the breed, registering the puppies, stud fees, vet visits during pregnancy and for the puppies, vaccinnations, etc.

2. One year old is not old enough. It would be like a 14 year old girl having babies. A responsible breeder will wait at least until 2 years.

3. My female does start to hump things about a month before going into heat. You will know when you see blood spots. Have her sleep on a pale blanket at night.

Dogs are a week coming into heat, a week in heat where they are ready to breed and a week going out of heat. Your dog will become swollen and red in the vaginal area and will leave little spots of blood where she sits. If this is her second heat you should already be aware of this. Humping the cat means nothing, my spayed and neutered animals hump too.
Is your dog breeding quality or did you buy a pet quality dog? Unless she is registered and of breeding quality you shouldn't use her for breeding at all. If she was bought for breeding you should have paid for breeding rights and she should be alright to breed on her second heat at over a year old. Only breed her once a year for two years then give her a full year off to recuperate.

Most of the time you really can't smell anything are you sure it is not her anal gland is it a musky smell pretty bad she could have released them herself does she scoot her butt on the floor these are all syptomes of anal glads a female dog will hump for dominets of other animal the will do this even if they are fixed also you should not breed her intill she is 2 years old. Have you read up on breeding these dogs I know a coulpe of breeders and some Doxies will eat there pups after they are born i don't know if it is because they are ratters or what but it has happen. To tell if your dog is going in to heat is your dogs valva will become swollen and if you wipe her down there you will see blood 7 to 10 days after you see blood she will be ready to breed.

When was her last heat cycle? Most dogs come in every 6 months, but some are longer, if its been more than 6 months she's probably due. I know this sounds gross, but I do it with my bitches, take a kleenex and pat down there and see if there is any blood, or if you allow her up on the couch or in her favorite spot put a light color sheet on and check to see if she's bleeding. Another sign that she's about to come is if she does a lot of cleaning. If you are thinking about breeding her you should take her to the vet, they can do some testing on her to tell you exactly where she is in her heat cycle. Hope that helps

She will start bleeding and her private area will be swollen. She will act interested in male dogs. You should wait until she is about 18 months to 2 yrs old to breed her.

Dogs (male and female) should be over 18months. As they are at a mature level at this age.

Her back end will swell & drip blood. She may try to leave the yard to find a man.
