I have a miniature dachshund, who is a little over a year old. She has been in heat once, and I think she is about to go into heat again. She has recently started humping things, for instance, her pillow, the cat (who likes it :s), or the floor. Why does she do this? Is this an indicator that she is about to go into heat? How can I make her stop?

She humps thing because obviously she is sexually excited. Humping things is normally what male dogs do, female dogs hump things because of hormones. Your dog obviously has a high level of the "male dog hormone". Like how some girls most of the times act like boys. The thing is that you have a dog so it doesn't really matter, don't think that your dog is gay now because this might just happen for a short time...as in it will soon be gone. Your dog is just in heat and u cant stop it unless you would like sum serious surgery

She may be going into heat, but some dogs do this as a show of dominance. If she does it for weeks then I would say that is why. There really isn't much you can do about it. It is a dog thing.

Female dogs do that, sometimes as much as male dogs. Sometimes it is a sign of oncoming heat, but is it is best to discourage this, for your dog might start doing it to other things- visitor's legs, for instance.

This is a dominance behavior. It is done by both sexes of dogs and used when they care frustrated about pack order and thier place in it.
Your dog is telling your cat that the dog is the dominant one.
Getting your dog spayed not only lowers her risk of mamary cancer it will most likely crub this type of behavior.

I have a female pit bull that used to hump my other 2 male pit bulls. Don't know why she did it, but after I had her spayed she stopped doing it.

This is a common problem. Even if you spay her, she may continue doing it. The brain of those small breeds is just wired up that way. Just give her a gentle scolding when she does it.
