Over-the-counter medications contain chemicals that destroy skin cells (e.g., acid) and may damage healthy tissue surrounding the wart. Self-treatment for plantar warts using an over-the-counter preparation is not recommended.

In some cases, podiatrists apply mild acid (e.g., salicylic acid, cantharidin, dichloroacetic acid) topically to treat plantar warts. This treatment, which often requires multiple applications over the course of several weeks, disintegrates viral cells and allows healthy skin cells to replace them.

I had a plantar's wart last year. It hurt like crazy!! My podiatrist put a chemical on it, he said it was about 5x stronger than the over the counter stuff. He bandaged it and left in on for a day and I came back a week later. He said I needed one more treatment, and that pretty much got rid of it. He did a lot of trimming during the process too. The black things are the bacteria (I believe). They are characteristic of plantar's warts.

The black things are the beginning of the roots. I have a plantar wart at the base of the pad of my right foot. It is from years of dance (ballet, jazz, tap, ballroom and disco. No tables LIL) I made mine shrink considerably by putting duck tape over it for a very long time. Okay, here is the step by step I did. I went to the doc and had him trim mine back too, then I soaked my feet in very warm water and tea tree oil that I got at the natural foods store. Because it was sore, I used a moleskin and a corn pad, because I was on my feet all the time. Then on the weekend, I washed first in the tea tree oil and after my feet dried completely I put the duck tape over the wart. I literally left it there until it fell off, then put another piece over it. What happened was it deprived the wart oxygen and it began to shrink. It has not gotten worse since I did that. I think it was 3 months, maybe more that I had the tape stuck to my foot. Now keep in mind, I was still on my feet all day so I kept tape with me all the time in case it got loose. Sounds crazy, but it worked. Good luck and it can't hurt to give it a try for yourself. Take care. Nana P.S. the tea tree oil is very important because it is a natural antiseptic. It's great for athletes foot too. I used it straight, and for a toenail fungus too. It stinks, but is worth it. Promise. Just be patient.
