Train full contact. You never know how well you can fight until you actually get into a few...and not this lame tournament style fights with pads and points and rules. The average person on the street is not gonna be wearing pads and will not hesitate to use knees, elbows, headbutts, eye gouging, biting, and anything else they can do to hurt you.
I worked in 2 different professions that required me to use physical force against others on a regular basis. I have gone toe to toe with "Black Belts" and experienced practicers of several different martial arts and most the fights ended up the same way...with them in a less than favorable and uncomfortable position. I did not "win" because I was had better techniques or was in better shape...I "won" because I trained full contact and know what it feels like to really hit someone and get hit back without the benefit of pads or my opponent taking it easy on me.
If you are unable to find people to spar full contact, there are some training techniques that can help. Here is one I have used:
Draw a circle 3 feet in diameter. Get 2 friends to put on some gloves (light ones but with some padding). Have 1 of the friends stand outside the circle while you stand inside. Have them start to attack you. You cannot strike back and cannot leave the circle. You just need to block or evade. After 30 seconds, the second friend joins in the attack. Again, you cannot hit back or leave the circle. Eventually you will get hit several times and feel what it is like to take a hit. Make sure your friends know that the drill ends when you move outside the circle (this is to limit how much punishment you actually take and you can always just jump out if you have had enough).
