Technical answer: In an embryo, the cells that cause pigmentation in the skin arise from a structure called the neural crest, which is just above where the backbone will be when it's fully developed. These cells migrate outwards to the head, sides, and eventually to the belly; this migration can be somewhat random, most noticeable in tortoiseshell cats. Some of these cells also migrate into the iris of the eye; if no pigment cells make it that far, the eye will be blue. So when your cat was an embryo, pigment cells got into one eye but not the other.
Folklore answer: Cats with odd-colored eyes bring good luck.
More trivia: Cells from the neural crest also give rise to the 'hair cells' in the inner ear. If they don't migrate there, the cat will be deaf. This is why cats with blue eyes are often (but not always) deaf - the neural crest cells didn't get to the eyes or the ears.

It actually means that somewhere in the family genes there are cats with brown eyes and cats with blue eyes and this cat carries the traits of both. Every so many generations will do this. It doesnt mean it will have any eye trouble at all.
Just like Siberian Huskys. They can have blue, brown or green eyes. If you want to breed you need to trace the family line and make sure that only 1 color is present to prevent this from happening. They are just fine with the duel color eyes. They just dont sell very well.

It means that you have a cat with two eyes. There is nothing wrong with it. It happens with animals as well as people. Ever check out David Bowie? There's an example of an all white man with one brown eye and one blue eye. See? Nothing wrong with him...except for the whole Ziggy Stardust thing, that is. I'm not sure what gene was responsible for that.

It is only a genetic thing. It doesn't mean it will be deaf, as a matter of fact a pure white cat with two blue eyes is most often deaf.

It just means you have an unusual kitty. I happens in all kinds of animals and in humans too. The dog next door has a brown eye and a blue eye (dalmation). David Bowe has two different color eyes.

It is not true that it will be deaf. I had one and she was fine and came when her kittens were crying. This is just a genetic thing that happens sometimes. This is called "Party eyes".
