Until you go back to the mid-1800s, most websites don't have much information on your ancestors. The best place to go is your elderly relatives to find out all you can. Then check out the church(es) that your ancestors attended, as well as the County Clerk's office where they were born, married and died. If you need to find out personal information, then trek to the library to pull up their obituaries (some are very, very detailed).
IMHO, www.genealogy.com will help a beginning researcher more than any other site. It's full of people with your last name, those who live in the town/county/state where your ancestors lived, and a lot of well-seasoned researchers who are happy to help people get started and get organized.
Other sites, like ancestry.com, familysearch.org and kindredkonnections are OK, but the quality of the information is shaky. It's only as good as the person who did it, and no one can fix errors except the person who made them. It's sad to see how much bad information floats around on them.

I am not sure, but I think familysearch.org is the Mormon public access URL, and the Mormons are the world's experts on genealogy. That URL may not have all that others have, but they also have training programs and free software.
They do not hit you over the head with their faith, there are links for the curious, but not mandatory.
