Roman Emperor Constantine hadn't been born yet. And, he didn't invent the doctrine of the Trinity until 325 CE.
Jesus was praying to the same God as everyone else.
The Catholic church couldn't make that fit into their pagan religion, so had to invent the Trinity to give pagans Gods they could worship.

Well worded, and excellent question I must add. May God guide you to understand it fully. The reason I pray this for you because no one can understand the trinity or God without His divine intervention and shining His light of love, knowledge and wisdom inside your heart.
But, as a brother, I will try to explain to you and hopefully my answer will somewhat help you.
For starters, we must anderstand that the Trinity is not a synonim for '3 Gods'...secondly, the term 'God' is not a name, but rather a description or title. For exmple, you are a Human Being, your Title is "Human". But, you are a composition of 3 elements...a Body, a Mind and a Spirit, but does anyone look at you and say "You are 3 different Humans???" no, because you are a singular entity that is composed of 3 destinct, but NOT SEPARATE entuties. and As a Human, these 3 componants make up the whole, which is 'you'.
Similarly, God is somewhat easiest explained like that. There is the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, all 3 make up the One God.
I agree with you, the term 'Trinity' was never officially used in the bible and was not around until the 2nd or 3rd century, but that was because the religious theology was in no need for it. However Christ did speak of His Triune nature in many aspects...when he was addressing Philip how would tell him "...don't you know that I am in the Father and the Father is in me. If you have seen me you have see the Father." This automatically directs our thoughts that Him and the Father are One, but are destinct because Christ did not elimanate His Father's existance and constantly prayed to him.
Also, when Christ was being baptised, we see clearly the trinitarian presence, where Christ was in the water, the Father's voice came from heaven saying "This is my Only begotten Son whom I am well pleased" and the Holy Spirit came and hovered over Him in the form of a Dove.
Again, we have to think 3 destinct 'personas' but One God...you separate any of them, then you automatically making 3 Gods.
Another great example of trinitarian explanation is fire. Fire comprises of 3 elements, Flame, Heat & Light. But are they 3 fires or just one fire??? and at the same time, is it logical to say that the flame, is the light is the heat?? are they 3 destinct 'personas' of the same one fire??? and can we say that the flame is older and separate from the light and the heat or are they all 3 equal and the same??
And just as the Flame gives forth light and heat at the same time, can we proclaim that it is 'older' than the light and heat???
Offcourse not, all three are equal, all three are the One fire.
So if the created fire can behave in a triune nature, how about the God that created the Fire, do u think he will have trouble existing as a Trinity???
As a result of the Unseparated, yet destinct united oness, the Son can speak to the Father and the Holy Spirit, but can still maintain the Unity as One Unique, uneseparable and none-differentiated God.
I know this is very hard and confusing...But as I said, God will give the revelation to u if you ask Him. God bless you and Guide you and please pray for me.

First...Jesus is NOT God (if there is one). Jesus was a man...a great teacher...a man ahead of his time...but just a MAN. Let me ask you a simple question: If Jesus died to absolve humanity of Sin than why is there still sin? Clearly this is the reason that Jesus can't be and is not related to God (if there is one). The Holy Spirit in the Trinity is the feeling you get when you've accomplished something or are happy about an event...even grief is comprised of a Holy feeling. PEACE!

1-God is unlimited (ie when Jesus was on Earth , doesn't meen that God is on earth , it is just a part of him)
2-Jesus has 2 things (A-Human part, B-GoD part)
so when he was praying he was showing how his human part needs God's help
If Jesus is God, then who did He pray to?
This is a very common question and the answer is found in understanding the Trinity and the incarnation of Jesus.
The Trinity is the doctrine that there is only one God in all existence. This one God exists as three persons: The Father, The Son, and the Holy Spirit. They are not three gods, but one God. Each is a separate person, yet each of them is, in essence, divine in nature.
A close analogy of the Trinity can be found by looking at the concept of time. Time is past, present, and future. There are three "aspects" or "parts" of time. This does not mean that there are three "times," but only one. Each is separate, in a sense, yet each shares the same nature, or essence. In a similar way, the Trinity is three separate persons who share the same nature.
The Incarnation
The doctrine of the incarnation in Christian teaching is that Jesus, who is the second person of the Trinity, added to himself human nature and became a man.
The Bible says that Jesus is God in flesh, "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.....and the word became flesh and dwelt among us" (John 1:1, 14); and, "For in Him all the fullness of Deity dwells in bodily form" (Col. 2:9). Jesus, therefore, has two natures. He is both God and man.
Jesus is completely human, but He also has a divine nature.
GOD
He is worshiped (Matt. 2:2,11; 14:33; 28:9)
He is prayed to (Acts 7:59; 1 Cor. 1:2)
He was called God (John 20:28; Heb. 1:8)
He was called Son of God (Mark 1:1)
He is sinless (1 Pet. 2:22; Heb. 4:15)
He knew all things (John 21:17)
He gives eternal life (John 20:28)
The fullness of deity dwells in Him (Col. 2:9)
MAN
He worshiped the Father (John 17)
He prayed to the Father (John 17:1)
He was called man (Mark 15:39; John 19:5).
He was called Son of Man (John 19:35-37)
He was tempted (Matt. 4:1)
He grew in wisdom (Luke 2:52)
He died (Rom. 5:8)
He has a body of flesh and bones (Luke 24:39)
As a man, Jesus needed to pray. When He was praying he was not praying to Himself, but to God the Father.

I agree with bucky_beaver here. Jesus is a component of God. God is 3 persons in one: the Godhead trinity. The Trinity is God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Just because Jesus is part of God doesn't mean he doesn't need to pray to him.
Prayer is communication with God. What.....Jesus can just grab God's thoughts to know what to do? No. Jesus has to talk to God and get the revelation from Him by spending time with Him. So while Jesus is God, he still has to operate in the right way by talking to Him in order for his needs to be met and to know what else to do.

Jesus is God, God is a Spirit, and when Jesus was born it was God Who was born in the Flesh, so Jesus is Flesh, That would make God the Father and then there is Holy Spirit whom Jesus Said before he ascended into heaven that he would send a Comforter while he is gone,. Its really hard to understand, that God, Jesus and The Holy Ghost is three in one but considered to be the same person. When Stephen was stoned in the New Testament it says he looked up into heaven and seen Jesus at the Right hand of God, so that shows you that they are Considered and Seen Separate and then Jesus said If you have seen Me you have seen the Father so its obvious that he considered them the same person. So i just recommend that you accept and believe in Jesus and We will see what everything is about when we get to heaven.

"If jesus is God...who was he praying to?"
Jesus was human (an incarnate human being). He did not know He was the "Son of God" at times in his life; at times He did. Other people did not know He was the Son -- as is evidenced by his family and friends rejection of Him (as it is said); other times He was respected as the Son of God. He was a follower of good principles. I assume the power of God works through Him and, being human, He had to learn how to "marry" the body and Spirit together.
When He was praying, whether He knew He was the Son or not, he (as a human) was praying to any higher authority other than His own. Because He did not possess the power of God (at times) to do things, He prayed for it.
As for the Trinity, He said (several times, I believe) "I and my Father are One". During those times, He knew the relationship -- I assume He knew a Holy Ghost/Spirit connected Them.
That's the best I can do answering your question.
Peace.

About 3 or 4 years ago I discovered Eckankar, something that I am very grateful for. Discovering Eckankar meant discovering the Holy Spirit or what we know as The ECK. My discovery of Eckankar sparked a very simple but significant change in my beliefs and awareness. Life was not just life. It is a path shared by me and the Holy Spirit, the ECK.
Upon discovering ECK, I learned a spiritual exercise, singing HU. Singing HU brought me closer to the ECK, the Holy Spirit. Suddenly, I dropped all my beliefs and I stopped making plans. I came to realize that my values were weighing me down and making me unhappy. I was also making room for the ECK to become apart of my life.At the time I found ECK I didn’t have much direction. I decided at the time that if I was going to deliver pizzas for the rest of my life (my job at the time) then, so be it. But that didn’t happen. My life began to change and I have experienced some blessings. Thank you GOD for creating and giving us the ECK!!!

When you go to a resturaunt and order eggs, why don't you specify that you want the two parts that are edible minus the shell? Besides, it is mentioned in the Bible. Trinity simply means three. The Bible says, "there are three that bare record in heaven." That means there are three beings that bare witness of one another.

He was praying to the god of Abraham (whom Christians call "God the Father").
The Bible mentions the Holy Spirit and the god of Abraham. With Jesus, that makes three.
