I need a good program (preferrably exploit and virus-free) which mimics the task manager. I want to be able to use every feature which is readily available on the Windows XP's Task Manager Utility.

Keep in mind... that I want it to MIMIC the utility... not use it. The computers on my network are getting stuck every time I try and use the Task Manager... so I need a good mimic.

I want to be able to kill processes. I have no idea what the hell is going on with my computer. I think some virus has taken hold over the "taskmgr" and "taskkill" processes... so I can't get rid of it!! I need a program which can mimic all the features of the Task Manager so I can see the problem.

I'd program it myself... but it'll take months... and I'm too freakin' lazy. :-p

Please help. This problem is pissing me off. My computers have slowed down like a bastard... :-(

*BTW, my AV progs can't find anything... so I don't know what it is...

I don't want to consider System Recovery just yet...

There is a great free task manager program which i have used to replace the Microsoft task manager (you can use it normally with out replacing windows task manager).

The program was written by Mark Russinovich (the guy who first discovered the Sony Root kit). it has helped me many times to find unknown variants of malware, and end their processes .Another handy feature is that you can see what handles are open, this is excellent when you find a new Trojan or such which has key logging capabilities.

Process explorer

If you if some time you might also want to try some of the other process tools, some of them can be used to terminate process running on remote machines.

The programs are mostly freeware but in some instances you must purchase a license.

Also there is one free video where they talk about the tools at the website.

I am not affiliated to sysinternals in anyway other than being a fan of the software.
